From ancient hall to county museum
The embryo for today's county museum can be found in the creation of Dalarnas Fornminnesförening, which was formed in 1862 as the sixth antiquities association in the country. The association began very quickly to collect objects and archives to preserve them for the future. In 1883, the antiquities association acquired its first museum building - the trivial school's old gymnasium, which is still on the corner of Kristinegatan - the Promenade. In 1892, the museum was opened to the public under the name Dala Fornsal. In 1926, Fornsalen moved into the so-called Vallmanska villa, which was located just above the county council's current office building. The county council acquired and had the house demolished in the mid-1950s, after which the museum collections were stored in various premises in the city, and the county antiquarian (Ingemar Tunander 1950-1955) with his small expedition moved into the Art Gallery while waiting for the county museum issue to find its final solution.
