Sweden’s most famous symbol, the Dala horse, originates from Dalarna, and Dalarna’s museum likely has the world’s largest collection of these horses. So, how did it happen? – That the small red wooden horse from Mora came to be the symbol of all of Sweden? In this guided tour, we will guide you through selected exhibitions, feel the wings of history, and hear the exciting story of the carved horses from the deep forests of Dalarna.

With your newfound knowledge of this fascinating craft, you will then get a horse each, to paint and decorate as you wish. Be inspired by the original or create your very own design. Of course, you get to take your horse home with you!

*GOOD TO KNOW This tour will be guided in english. The tour is a total of 1.5 hours, with half the time being a guided tour and the other half for painting your Dala horse on your own. When you finish decorating your horse, it is, of course, yours to take home. You won’t find a better memory from your trip to Sweden!

The tour is designed for an adult audience. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by a paying adult. For smaller children pensils and paper are awalible, only children with payed ticket are getting a horse for painting. The horses to be decorated are approximately 10cm tall and come pre-painted red. The museum provides an inspiration, brushes, and paint on-site for your creativity.*

”Memories from Dalarna”

During June, July, and August, we offer public tours of ”Memories from Dalarna”. By tickets here.

Why is there a statue of Selma Lagerlöf in the middle of Falun? How did farmers imagine a crocodile in the 18th century, and how did a small painted wooden horse become a symbol for the whole of Sweden? These are some of the questions answered during this tour through the museum’s most popular exhibitions. We delve into the people, craftsmanship, and forward-thinking spirit that have shaped Dalarna throughout history and continue to influence our days.

Dressed in Dalarna

Dalarna boasts over forty different parish-specific costumes. Some of these costumes span over four hundred years of clothing and fashion development, resulting in an entire wardrobe of attire for various celebrations and seasonal use. Other costumes were created during the 20th century and have been worn as traditional attire for specific occasions. The use of costumes in Dalarna has always been fascinating, expressing identity, pride, community, and above all, craftsmanship.

Dalarna Painting

Lush kurbits motivs from Dalarna painters in Leksand and Rättvik are probably familiar. But how did Rättvik painters decorate the homes of their prominent clients, the large farmers in Hälsingland? What do we know about how the rural population painted in southern Dalarna – and what’s the story with Falun’s many, often overlooked, painters? Come and learn more about the diversity of Dalarna’s interior painting, its materials, expressions, and dissemination. Perhaps Dalarna painting is more than you thought!
